I Forget

(I forget) God knows what He’s talking about.

That might seem like an odd first statement. Of course, Allah (swt) knows what He’s talking about; He is Al-ʿAlīm, the All-Knowing, after all. Unfortunately though, this is one of those statements that sits upon the tongues, rarely ever to be swallowed into the heart. Let me show you how:

As humans, we’ll never be able to have the all knowledge necessary to make a decision that we are 100% sure of. Why then do we not trust the decision made by the One who does have knowledge over it all?

And it’s not just about knowing that Allah (swt) is the All-Knowing but also Al-Wadūd, the Most-Loving and He (swt) would not prescribe something for us unless it is the best possible thing for us.

Not only is He the One who loves us the most but he is also Al-Khaliq The Creator, the one who knows us the best and is All-Knowing about the situation we are in. Hence, every piece of the puzzle necessary is present for us to trust Him completely and follow what He (swt) says.

Which begs the question, why don’t we (I) heed His advice?

When everything is going wrong, when deadlines are piling up and family is overbearing, when friends are too busy themselves to pick up the burden and every door seems to shut in your face and all the windows are sealed, why do we not follow Allah (swt) when He says “seek assistance through patience and prayer” [2:45]? Why instead do we automatically start to either freak out or give up?

When Allah (swt) says “Say to the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty….” “And say to the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty.” [Qur’an, 24:30-31] should we not hear and obey as the righteous before us did? Why then do we insist that we know better, that we’re the exception that doesn’t need Allah’s ruling, that this guidance – and all others – were given for ‘weaker’ Muslims?

We really need to reevaluate ourselves.  We need to make sure that we really trust in Allah (swt) and that complete dependence upon Him embedded in our hearts. Because without that, we cannot hope to be like those righteous before us who heard and obeyed.

As always, this is advice to myself first before anyone else, and this time more than any other.

Prayer Trouble

As salamu Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

I wanted to relay an important message to you regarding focus in Salah. This is an important topic that is extremely relevant especially in the present time. We live in a society of instant gratification, and that opens the doors for us to become more available to other people, and trying to meet their demands, such as demands at work, or friends that wish to speak to you or spend time with you, or maybe even family. Instead of giving us more time, technology actually takes time away from us, and we have all those thoughts running through our mind before, during and after our prayer.

What is the solution to this?

Firstly, Allah has given us five prayers throughout the day. You can consider these to be breaks from our daily lives, and all the misery we go through in it. Allah has blessed us with the opportunity to completely stop thinking about everything we hate about our lives, and focus on him. Don’t people go out and drink alcohol, and abuse drugs to forget their problems? We, as Muslims, don’t need that. We can just focus on our provider, Allah, who loves us, and no matter how much we feel, we cannot return that type of love. Step one is to only realize these matters.

Secondly, because we face problems, and desires in this world, we tend to work towards, and focus our mind on them because we do not feel that we get enough help. Why do we go to people for help? Why do we not ask Allah? This is the focus I want to bring up.

Always have something to ask for when you pray. A friend once relayed to me: Allah wants you to pray to him, and ask Him for more! And he loves that! A lot of religion asks that the creation give to the Creator, give time, effort, etc. Allah is self-sustaining! He does not need us! Allah instead tells us to give time to him for a better purpose! That purpose is for our own self-betterment!

This is our human nature: to want more. Unfortunately, this nature shuts off when praying, and instead, we don’t realize that we are in a place where we can ask for anything we want from Allah. This does not mean we ask for worldly things incessantly. Ask for something nice, and we all know what I’m talking about. I speak of guidance, Allah’s mercy, expiation of sins, ease for us, our parents, the Muslims, etc.

So why not exercise that with the One who will actually give us what is good for us? I used to make the mistake of not asking because I did not really feel the need to ask. That was my subconscious pride working against me. May Allah forgive me for that.

Remember: “Whoever has an atom’s worth of kibr (pride) in his heart will not enter Paradise” Sahih Muslim 1/65 (http://abdurrahman.org/character/pridebarrior.html)

So remember to always ask for something. We may not realize it, but we ask for something every time we recite Fatiha, correct? We ask Allah to guide us on the straight path.

InshaAllah, our prayers are at best when we prey with a motive and ask for something. If any one of you are having trouble, it may work. If not, then tailor something that works for you and do not hesitate to share it with your fellow brothers and sisters, because they may need it more than you. May Allah guide us on the straight path. Ameen!

Tips for Salah:
1) Before making your Salah, think of this : Have you ever considered the fact that you are praying to the king of kings ? That when you hear the adhan or check your prayer times, you get this
overwhelming feeling that your lord is calling you upon him?2) Rather than considering salah as one of those long daily rituals you have to carry out because it’s part of the ‘deen’ - why not look at it as meaningful conversation with God. A time during the day where you put all your worldly matters in the hands of God and ask him to bless you and help you. You know He can.3) When you’re praying avoid looking up at the sky or around you, no matter how fidgety you can be. This only makes you distracted and will take the worth out of your Salah. How would you like it if you are having a conversation with someone and they keep turning away ? The best way to stop this from happening, is praying in a quiet room away from all the noise and distractions of life. 4) Avoid being paranoid . By that I mean, don’t overthink stuff like ‘did you carry out wudhu properly’ ‘how many sajadah have you got left’ again that will only distract you. It’s also shaytaan’s greatest weapons against you to make you stay away from practising the perfect prayer. So whenever you feel paranoid istaeed be Allah from the shaytan .5) Don’t recite your prayers silently and don’t recite them too loud. Try to reach a medium. This will stop your thoughts from getting you confused with your recitation and also increase your concentration levels.6) Give each letter, each movements and each duaa its moment. Just because ‘allahu akbar’ takes less time and less effort than the ‘tashawud’ doesn’t mean you take it less seriously. 7) Take your time! That soap opera your watching is not going to vouch for you on judgement day. Set your priorities straight.Let’s make Salah as perfect and as complete as possible. Inshallah this will become one of the many GOOD habits that we develop

Dua for last ten days of ramadhan

Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee

اللْهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: I asked the Messenger of Allah salAllaahu alaiyhi wasallam: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’

“(Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and Tirmidhi).

The Advice of Sayedna Omar (RA)

  • Place the affairs of your brother when they reach you upon the best of interpretations until there comes to you clarity which overcomes that.
  • Do not think ill of a statement which comes from another Muslim if you can find a good interpretation for it.
  • Whoever exposes himself to suspicion let him not blame those who then think badly of him, and whoever conceals his own and his brothers secrets, strength of choice will be in his hands.
  • Hold fast to truthful companions, live with them closely for they are a charm at times of ease and an aid at times of difficulty.
  • Stick to the truth even if the truth kills you,
  • Do not ask about things which haven’t taken place for indeed, that which has already taken place is enough to preoccupy you from it!
  • Do not seek help or take your affairs to someone who doesn’t wish to see you succeed, and do not befriend the sinful lest you learn from his sins and evil.
  • Keep away from your enemy and be cautious of even your friend, except for the truthful and trusted friend.
  • And no-one is trustworthy except him who fears Allah.
  • Do not involve yourself with issues that don’t concern you.
  • Humble yourself at the graves, lower yourself in obedience and stand firm against disobedience.
  • And when it comes to your affairs, seek counsel only from those who truly fear Allah for indeed, Allah says,

“…Indeed, it is only those who have knowledge among His Slaves, that truly fear Allah.” [al-Fatir:28]

Long but rewarding

Let stop and think, how many of us are actually “good” muslims? Muslims that sin as little as possible and does lots of good deeds? To be honest, I doubt many of us are. Do we read Qur’an everyday? Do we fast Mondays & Thursdays like the Prophet Muhammed (SAWS) used to to do? Do we limit the sins we commit? What holds us? Do you want to know?
The road to being a good muslim is a long one, filled with hardship and hard turns. We take the first step lots of times, but then we look at the long way ahead of us and we bail. We do the same thing over and over again. The road is too long that it scares us to go through it. That is why we stick with the “modern” muslim attitude and sadly some of us are stuck with the “bad” muslim attitude.
Look at our educational road, for instance. We went to kindergarden, school,  then college. Years and years of education. Were we born teachers? Were we born doctors? Businessmen? No, did we become those in a few years? No, actually, it took us at least 13 years before “starting” our careers. Whats the difference between school and religion? The career path is mandatory for us to have a good life and is mainly filled with people around us who forget and in return make you forget. The huge difference is that the Muslim road is not mandatory. Not a lot of people walk that road, and when you actually do walk that rude, you feel alienated. What will you do, then?
Take the road slowly and don’t make it an actual plan. Just say I will quit a bad habit and I shall gain a good one. How hard is that? With time, you will start kicking off those habits and getting good ones? (Yarab!) But if you threw all your bad habits behind you and say I’ll be a good person from now on, some may succeed, but some won’t. So get a notepad write your bad habits and the good ones you want to lose & gain. Every 2 weeks scratch a bad habit and stop doing it. If you ever relapse and did it again, do not throw the notepad (Ina allah 5aforin Ra7em.) Acknowledge your mistakes. Start your two weeks all over again and do a penalty such as if I did this bad thing, I can’t do this “good” thing that makes me happy for a week. Your plan varies,  but you should start now. The road is long but very very rewarding.
All you need is willpower.
