Project Iqraa: Surat Al Ikhlas

Asalam Aleykom everyone!

Let’s continue on our path of understanding and let’s discover the reason, meaning, and virtues behind Surat Al Ikhlas.

Imam Ahmad recorded from Ubayy bin Ka`b that the idolators said to the Prophet , “O Muhammad! Tell us the lineage of your Lord.” So Allah (SWT) revealed:

Say, “He is Allah , [who is] One,

Allah , the Eternal Refuge.

He neither begets nor is born,

Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

                                                     Tafseer:

(Say: “He is Allah, One.”) meaning, He is the One, the Singular, Who has no peer, no assistant, no rival, no equal and none comparable to Him. This word (Al-Ahad) cannot be used for anyone in affirmation except Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because He is perfect in all of His attributes and actions. Concerning His saying,

(As-Samad) is One Who does not give birth, nor was He born, because there is nothing that is born except that it will die, and there is nothing that dies except that it leaves behind inheritance, and indeed Allah does not die and He does not leave behind any inheritance.

(Allah As-Samad.) `Ikrimah reported that Ibn `Abbas said, “This means the One Who all of the creation depends upon for their needs and their requests.” `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn `Abbas, “He is the Master Who is perfect in His sovereignty, the Most Noble Who is perfect in His nobility, the Most Magnificent Who is perfect in His magnificence, the Most Forbearing Who is perfect in His forbearance, the All-Knowing Who is perfect in His knowledge, and the Most Wise Who is perfect in His wisdom. He is the One Who is perfect in all aspects of nobility and authority. He is Allah, glory be unto Him. These attributes are not befitting anyone other than Him. He has no coequal and nothing is like Him. Glory be to Allah, the One, the Irresistible.” Al-A`mash reported from Shaqiq, who said that Abu Wa’il said, (As-Samad.) is the Master Whose control is complete.”

(He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.) meaning, He does not have any child, parent or spouse. Mujahid said, (And there is none comparable to Him.) “This means He does not have a spouse.” (And there is none comparable to Him.) This means that there is none similar to Him, none equal to Him and there is nothing at all like Him.”

Some Virtues of Surat Al Ikhlas:

1.     Al-Bukhari reported from `Amrah bint `Abdur-Rahman, who used to stay in the apartment of `A’ishah, the wife of the Prophet , that `A’ishah said, “The Prophet sent a man as the commander of a war expedition and he used to lead his companions in prayer with recitation (of the Qur’an). And he would complete his recitation with the recitation of `Say: He is Allah, One.’ So when they returned they mentioned that to the Prophet and he said, (Ask him why does he do that.) So they asked him and he said, `Because it is the description of Ar-Rahman and I love to recite it. So the Prophet said, (Inform him that Allah the Most High loves him.)”

2.     Al-Bukhari recorded from Abu Sa`id that a man heard another man reciting (Say: “He is Allah, One.”) and he was repeating over and over. So when morning came, the man went to the Prophet and mentioned that to him, and it was as though he was belittling it. The Prophet said, (By He in Whose Hand is my soul, verily it is equivalent to a third of the Qur’an.)

3.     Another Hadith Al-Bukhari recorded from Abu Sa`id, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah said to his Companions, (Is one of you not able to recite a third of the Qur’an in a single night) This was something that was difficult for them and they said, “Which of us is able to do that, O Messenger of Allah” So he replied, (“Allah is the One, As-Samad” is a third of the Qur’an.) Al-Bukhari was alone in recording this Hadith.

                                          Take time to reflect:

Now that you understand the meaning of the wonderful surah and its importance, think of the words that you are saying when you recite it, think of what they mean, and reflect upon what they mean to you.

And Allah (SWT) knows best.

Tranquility and peace of mind

Have you ever felt your heart pounding out of fear? Or felt so restless that you can’t sleep?  Or was so worried that you couldn’t even function? And you would do anything just to have some peace of mind? I think most of us felt like this at one situation or another in our lives.

I’m aero-phobic, which means that I have a fear of flying. Recently I had to get on a plane to Saudi and back. On my way there, I was so terrified that I didn’t talk, eat, drink or move at all the whole trip. I had trouble breathing and I could hear my heart beating so loud that I felt it was going to explode. When the plane finally landed, I was thinking I’ll never get on a plane again, even if it means I’ll stay in Saudi for the rest of my life. Yes, this is how much I was scared.

During my stay in Saudi, I came across a friend of mine who gave me the best advice ever. She told me to listen to “Ayat Al-Sakina” or “The verses of tranquility “while on the plane.

The verses of tranquility are the ones that include the word “Sakina” or “Tranquility” in them. Here are some of them:

“It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith. And to Allah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allah Knowing and Wise” (1)

“Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest” (2)

“When those who disbelieved had put into their hearts chauvinism - the chauvinism of the time of ignorance. But Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and imposed upon them the word of righteousness, and they were more deserving of it and worthy of it. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.” (3)

image

“Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers angels whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers.” (4)

“If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.” And Allah sent down his tranquility upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” (5)

So on my way back home, I got on the plane (unwillingly) and I kept reading these verses with firm belief that this will work and it did work like a charm. I can’t tell you how much reading these verses have calmed me down, I was really relaxed and I actually enjoyed my flight back. I promised myself that when I get back home I have to tell people about these verses.

Allah says in Surat Ar-Ra`d : “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.”(6)

So next time you feel worried, afraid or anxious. You can try a million remedies, but Allah gave you the best one, his remembrance.

Yes indeed our hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah, May Allah grant us all peace of mind and heart.

Project Iqraa: Surat Al Asr

                                             Project Iqraa: Surat Al Asr

Asalam Aleykom everyone!

Let’s continue with our journey of understanding the Holy Qur’an. Today’s Surah is a Surah that we all probably know by heart and now it’s time to understand it’s extraordinary meaning.

 103:1

   By time,

103:2Indeed, mankind is in loss,

103:3

Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

                                                              Tafseer:

Al-`Asr is the time in which the movements of the Children of Adam occur, whether good or evil.

Malik narrated from Zayd bin Aslam that he said, “It is the evening.” However, the first view is the popular opinion. Thus, Allah swears by this, that man is in Khusr, which means in loss and destruction.

(Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds) So Allah makes an exception, among the species of man being in loss, for those who believe in their hearts and work righteous deeds with their limbs. (And recommend one another to the truth,) This is to perform acts of obedience and avoid the forbidden things. (And recommend one another to patience.) meaning, with the plots, the evils, and the harms of those who harm people due to their commanding them to do good and forbidding them from evil.

And Allah knows best.

Project Iqraa: Surat Al Falaq

Asalam Aleykom,

As most of you may know, our SuperFard Revival for this month is Reading Qur’an. Today we will discuss Surat Al Falaq. Get ready to learn and better understand the immenseness of one of the first surahs that most of us were probably taught at a young age.

(Say: “I seek refuge with the Lord of Al-Falaq.”)( and (Say: “I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind.”)( These two Surahs (are the best protection).) Imam Malik recorded from `A’ishah that whenever the Messenger of Allah was suffering from an ailment, he would recite the Mu`awwidhatayn over himself and blow (over himself). Then if his pain became severe, `A’ishah said that she would recite the Mu`awwidhatayn over him and take his hand and wipe it over himself seeking the blessing of those Surahs. Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah all recorded this Hadith.

It has been reported from Abu Sa`id that the Messenger of Allah used to seek protection against the evil eyes of the Jinns and mankind. But when the Mu`awwi- dhatayn were revea- led, he used them (for protection) and aban- doned all else besides them. At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa’i and Ibn Majah recorded this. At-Tirmidhi said, “This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.”

Surah Al-Falaq
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak (1) From the evil of that which He created; (2) From the evil of the darkness when it is intense, (3) And from the evil of malignant witchcraft, (4) And from the evil of the envier when he envieth. (5)

Tafseer:

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Jabir said, “Al-Falaq is the morning.” Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas, “Al-Falaq is the morning.” The same has been reported from Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubayr, `Abdullah bin Muhammad bin `Aqil, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Muhammad bin Ka`b Al-Qurazi and Ibn Zayd.

(From the evil of what He has created,) This means from the evil of all created things. Thabit Al-Bunani and Al-Hasan Al-Basri both said, “Hell, Iblis and his progeny, from among that which He (Allah) created.”

(And from the evil of the Ghasiq when Waqab,) Mujahid said, “Ghasiq is the night, and `when it Waqab’ refers to the setting of the sun.”

(And from the evil of the blowers in knots,) Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Al-Hasan, Qatadah and Ad-Dahhak all said, “This means the witches.” Mujahid said, “When they perform their spells and blow into the knots.”

And from the evil of the envier when he envieth.

May Allah Protect us all from all types of evil!

Al-Istighfar (Seeking forgiveness)

Most of the time when we ask Allah for his forgiveness, it’s after we’ve committed a sin or a wrong doing, or maybe when we remember something from the past that we truly regret doing, so we ask Allah to forgive us for that. That’s all good, but what lots of us don’t know is that Istighfar has so many merits and it can be the key to a lot of the problems we face in our lives. And if we realize how important Istighfar is, we would make it a daily habit like our prophet (pbuh) used to do.

Allah says in Surat Nuh “And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver; He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers; And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.” (1)

So ask Allah for forgiveness and you’ll have peace of mind, increase in wealth, righteous offspring and plentiful rain.

Abdullah ibn Abbas (RAA) said: the Prophet (pbu) said: “He who often seeks forgiveness, Allah grants him relief from all troubles, a way out of all distress, and sustenance beyond his expectation.” (2)

Therefore if you often seek Allah’s forgiveness, he will provide for you a way out of every tight situation and you will have inner peace. Even a sin can be seen as a blessing if it will cause you to turn to Allah’s repentance.

Ali ibn Abu Talib (RAA) used to say, “It puzzles me that a man should perish when he possesses the means to save himself.” He has been asked: what is that? He said “Asking for Allah’s forgiveness.”

Abu Hurayrah (R.A.A.) said: I heard Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) saying, “By Allah! I ask Allah for forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”(3)

image

So why don’t we start making Istighfar a daily habit. Start by putting a daily goal for yourself say 50 times a day and you can go up from there.

Allah says in Surat Hūd: And [saying], “Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day. (4)

When you are going through a hard time, remember there’s a way out, ask Allah for forgiveness with a true belief that he will help you through it.

One of the best ways to ask Allah for forgiveness is through a hadith mentioned in Bukhari that is known as the “Chief of Istighfar”:

“O’ Allah You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise (to You) as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You.”

The Prophet added. “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.” (5)

So whether its wealth, children, peace of mind, happiness, strong faith or whatever it is that you want. Ask Allah for it through Istighfar. He is the most forgiving, the most merciful and He is over all things competent.

May Allah forgive us all for our sins.

Allah Will Test Us - Qutaibah Abbasi - Quran Weekly

This is the famous story of the hairstylist for the family of Firaun (Pharaoh). Although she was punished and tortured by the most corrupt and arrogant man to ever exist, she kept her trust in Allah and received the ultimate reward.

Do you depend on Allah (SWT)?
